A new resource for the teaching of Tamil to children is the Curriculum Guide for Tamil (Pillai and Nithiya, 2007) developed at Goldsmiths College and linked to the Asset Languages qualifications for Tamil recently introduced as part of the UK's National Languages Strategy. The Guide has been designed primarily to support the work of Tamil teachers working in over forty Tamil community schools across the UK and to support recognition of children's achievement in the language. It is based on an up-to-date communicative approach to language teaching in which use of information and communications technology is seen to have a key role to play. Resources to support teachers in delivering activities proposed in the Guide, including Powerpoint files and material for use with the interactive whiteboard, are provided on the Goldsmiths 'community-gold' website to which there is free access. A further bank of resources related to the guide, but intended for a wider audience, is being developed through partnership with Pollachi Nasan , an educational advisor for Tamil language in South India, and can be viewed on his website. These up-to-date interactive resources, which use images, animation and sound and video clips are intended for use both in the classroom and at home. In creating the Guide, there has also been valuable collaboration with Tamil colleagues in France, Germany, Switzerland and Norway, facililitated by fast communication and easy transfer of documents over the Internet.
